Information for Applicants with Disabilities

Health and Safety Management College (HSMC) is committed to providing equal access to education and training for all students, while maintaining a high standard of academic rigor. Under the Ontario Human Rights Code, HSMC will work with students to develop a plan for reasonable accommodations, adaptations, and supports.

Students requiring accessibility accommodations should disclose this at the time of admission and must meet all of the standard entrance requirements for admission to a HSMC program of study. All students are required to demonstrate and achieve the competencies and performance standards outlined within the program curriculum. Reasonable accommodations or adaptations allow students to achieve the same required learning outcomes through alternate methods of delivery, assessment, and/or participation. If a required accommodation or adaptation results in a change to the delivery or assessment of program curriculum to such an extent that the required learning outcomes can no longer be met, HSMC will determine if enrollment in the proposed program is possible.

For further information on this issue, please refer to Accommodating students with disabilities – Roles and responsibilities (fact sheet) | Ontario Human Rights Commission

In accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s (OHRC) Policy on accessible education for students with disabilities, we can support individualized academic accommodation planning to students with temporary and permanent disabilities.

This could be:

  • a Learning Disability/Disorder;
  • a chronic health or mental health condition;
  • a physical disability or impairment;
  • an Acquired Brain Injury, post-concussive syndrome;
  • a sensory disability or impairment such as blindness or deafness;
  • a neurodiversity, ADD, ADHD or autism.

We use the term “disability” when we talk about registration with our office to be consistent with the language in the OHRC policies.

Disclosure and Admission Requirements

Applicants who may require accessibility or learning accommodations are encouraged to disclose this at the time of admission so that appropriate supports can be arranged in advance.

All applicants must still meet the standard entrance requirements for admission into an HSMC program of study.

Accommodations cannot lower the essential competencies, performance standards, or learning outcomes of the program.

Reasonable accommodations may include alternative methods of:

However, if a requested accommodation would change the essential requirements of the program to the extent that required learning outcomes cannot be met, HSMC will determine whether enrollment in that program is possible.
