Where is the In Person Class?

How do I know if I am a Vocational or Non-Vocational Student?
Vocational:
• Costs over $1999
• AND paid for by, student or family member or personal education savings plan
• Training is covered under the requirements of the Ontario Colleges Act, 2005
• Student will need register and complete the entire 5-module program, less any exemptions to which they are entitled
• Advanced Standing(A/S)/Exemptions (E) Form
Non-Vocational:
• Costs are $2000 or less
• OR paid by, Employer, Union, Industry Association, Government Job Grant
• Training is NOT covered by the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005
• Exemption Application Form 2018 – CFAA
Exemptions
I have 309A certification, are there any exemptions?
Yes. If you hold the 309A certification, you can apply for an exemption from Courses 2, 3 & 4 , please see attached Exemption Form. You would be required to take Course 1 & 5 sequentially.
What are my exemptions as a Vocational Student?
Advanced Standing (A/S) / Exemptions (E) Form
When will I receive approvals on my Exemptions?
The Canadian Fire Alarm Association will be required to review and approve your exemptions. This may take up to 2 weeks. If you haven’t received any information within that time period, please contact us.
I have a college degree in electrical construction, is there any course I don’t have to take?
If you have completed post secondary communications course with minimum 60% passing grade , you may be exempt from Course 2. If you have taken any electrical or electronics courses you may also be able to qualify for an exemption.
You may be eligible for an exemption (advanced standing) for one or more of CFAA Courses 2, 3 and 4. Exemptions are based solely upon courses that have been previously completed at a College, University or Trade School level or CFAA.
A Vocational HSMC student may be granted an exemption for one or more of CFAA Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4. Exemptions are based solely upon courses that have been previously completed through the CFAA or at a College, University or Trade School level. HSMC requires a minimum grade of 60% in order for exemptions to be considered. Work experience and High School courses are not grounds for an exemption. There are no exceptions to this policy.
Each student will be assessed on an individual basis. Required documentation for an exemption is:
- a CFAA certificate, OR
- a photocopy of the official course transcript, and a copy of the course outline, OR
- a copy of an electrician’s wallet license.
Curriculum
What are my options for taking the courses?
You may select either “online” or “in-class” options, when you register. We prefer you stick to one option. If you are able, we highly recommend “in-class” for best results.
What is the passing Grade on Quizzes?
A 60% or above is required on Course Quizzes.
What is the passing Grade on Exams?
A 60% or above is required to pass the Course Exams and Practical Exam, which is the industry standard with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.
What is the passing the grade for the Continuing Education (CE)?
The pass for Continuing Education Tests is 70%.
Fees
Is there any government funding?
As a vocational student, you may qualify for funding from the Ontario Government: Better Jobs Ontario
What is the payment plan? Is it full amount due upon registration?
In order to be enrolled into the program, a deposit of 20% of your fees (up to a maximum of $500) is required. We will confirm the exact deposit amount after processing your registration.
The payment plan works as follows: The remaining balance (total course cost minus the deposit) is split into equal parts based on the number of courses. For example, for the CFATP course, one-fifth of the remaining balance (including taxes and textbooks) is due on the first day of each class.
What is your cancellation/refund policy?
A $150 administration fee will be charged for cancellations received less than 5 working days prior to the start date of each course. ‘No shows’ will be charged the full fee. Qualified substitutions are at the discretion of Health and Safety Management College.
